dinner at lolita

On Saturday night, we went to Lolita with a group of our friends. The restaurant was packed. It was nice to see such a big crowd from the time we got there until we left.

We sat in the main dining room, which I haven’t sat in for quite some time. We usually sit at the bar or by the window. I forgot how much I like the dining room – it really is a beautiful space. Trendy and chic, but in a warm and inviting kind of way. While the boys talked sports, the girls caught up, shared a lot of laughs and took over the menu by ordering a bunch of appetizers, including: Berkshire prosciutto, heirloom tomatoes with olives and fresh mozzarella, almond and garlic dip with rosemary and sea salt flatbread, roasted dates with almonds and pancetta and roasted chicken wings with cilantro and lime (this I didn’t try). The appetizers were fantastic. The dates, though small, were packed with flavor. Sweet, but not overbearing. Very satisfying. The prosciutto, perhaps my favorite, was simply delicious and not too salty. And the tomatoes were among the best I’ve had in a long time. I was really impressed with all our choices.

For dinner, I had the bucatini with pancetta, chiles and tomatoes. My husband had the pizza with duck egg and prosciutto; we swapped halfway through. I have heard a lot of great things about the Neapolitan pizza, the special new oven and all the training involved so I was eager to try it for myself. I wasn’t disappointed. It’s simple, but in a good way. Which I think is what they are going for. The crust was very thin and crispy – even a bit chewy. Ever since I had the one pizza with egg at Otto in NYC, I’ve been waiting to have a similar pizza here. I love the yolk blended with all the other flavors. It was a good dish and I look forward to trying the other options. As for my pasta, I’m sorry to admit I wasn’t impressed. The bucatini itself and the tomatoes were good, and if that was all I was expecting it would be a satisfying meal. But I was hoping for a cross between the bucatini at Baricelli and the former Battuto – or at least to taste the pancetta. If there was pancetta in this dish, I couldn’t tell. I also didn’t taste any of the heat from the chili. But, the majority of the meal was flavor-filled and simply delicious and the company was perfect, so it was a great evening. Next time I go though, I have to start writing down the wine. I have a terrible memory when it comes to this and can never remember what I order. I had three glasses of red; one from the bar when we got there and the next two were the server’s choice. I really enjoy full-bodied red wines that are a bit on the dry side. The server, who was great all night by the way, made a perfect selection. I just wish I knew what it was so I could look for it at the store, and order it next time I’m in.

I do plan on getting to Wonder Bar - it's been on my list for awhile. I enjoy Michael's blog and his contributions to this blog very much. The menu sounds delicious and it is in a great area. We're getting into the busy season for restaurants before the big post-holiday slowdown first quarter. So hopefully this will draw a lot of people into discover the beauty of small plates.

Wonder Bar was mentioned in the Scene today. You should eat there, it's really good. Nobody is eating there because it's tapas food and the foodies haven't found it yet; meat-and-potatoes clevelanders don't understand tapas, I think. I took several foodie friends there for dinner, including a vegetarian and everyone loved what they had.

I have been there, but it was so long ago, I would need to go back to give a fair opinion.

Here are my thoughts on list you just gave.....

Wonder Bar: great cookies. But everytime I walk by there they are DEAD. I think they need to do a bit of promoting for themselves!

Bar One: It is the same chef/owner of the now closed Palmer's turned Trivisti (sp?) in Strongsville. with Bar one, it is a very nice space but i am nervous about the location for dinner diners. But I think that it is going to be hopping with lunch and happy hour.

Dante: OMG I am SOOOOOOOOO excited to try it! after reading his huge write up in Cleveland Magazine I can't wait!

Crop Bistro: Fresh, Fresh, Fresh. great ingredients. It still has a bit of the Johnny's feel to it though. I think I'm giving it a second try next Friday.

As for the others, they are on my list too! : )

Have you been to 3 Birds in Lakewood?

Glad you found it. I have definitely added Light Bistro to my must-dine list. Maybe I will even check it out on Sunday after the game if they are open. If not, one night very soon for sure. I also need to check out Wonder Bar, Bar One, Dante, 2182 Bistro, Crop Bistro and Udupi. Oh, and Venenzia on the west side (not 100% on spelling).

Just found your blog and have been reading it for the last half hour! don't tell my boss... haha. I was actually looking to see if you had a Light Bistro post, but you didn't. Then I looked in your comments and Diane brought it up as well. I dined at Light during the grand opening period as well. (Before they started getting all sorts of awards, and their heads got a bit big) I had a great dining experience but the bartender was a bit pompous. Alas, I am going there again this Friday. I'm very excited to give it another try and go in with open eyes and just enjoy the food. They are so creative with their concoctions and flavors, a lot of other cleveland restaurants cant even compare. I mean you can make your own steak on a hot stone, donuts and coffee??? And the Chef, wow. I saw him at Scene's Tasteful affair where he won the Ironfork competition (think food networks iron chef) He earned that win! Well I'll try toreport back with my thoughts on Friday night meal. Hopefully you'll get to try it out soon. Also, they are open for lunch now aw well.

Welcome back. This city has tons of great restaurants in all geographic areas. A lot of them are listed here, and plenty more I haven't had a chance to write about or yet to visit. For example, Fire in Shaker Square. Very talented chef, nice space and even better menu. Christopher's in Aurora - have yet to go but continue to hear wonderful things. I think you will be happy with what you find. As for Light Bistro, I have yet to go. I loved the restaurant that was there prior to Light, Parker's Bistro, and have read/heard that the chef at Light has many of the same culinary beliefs that Chef Parker Bosley did, in regards to using locally grown produce, lots of organics, etc. From most people I have heard good reviews; however, I have heard a couple of rants but I'm hoping that is because it was around the grand opening. If you go, please report back.

I just relocated to Cleveland from San Fran and my fiancee just found your blog. I grew up in Cleveland, but so much has changed since I last lived here. Based on your blog it seems like there are plenty of places to try! Oh, and have you been to Light Bistro yet? We wanted to know if it was good.

I'm introducing my friends to Tremont and we are now meeting at Lolita once a month -- if we stick to our every third Thursday of month routine.
