geraci’s restaurant

Speaking of places that breed familiarity, I had dinner last night at Geraci’s Restaurant in University Heights. We were on the way home from visiting our new nephew, Jake William, at UH. We bypassed Little Italy for pizza for Geraci’s, a place my brother and I used to eat at all the time when we were kids since our gram and most of her siblings were good friends with the Geraci family (I think all Italians automatically were back in the day).

Geraci’s has been around for decades, and not much has changed since my first visit there 25 years ago. Oversized, cushy booths, friendly staff, a long and narrow aisle, and a partially open kitchen – it’s your classic, busy, family-run restaurant. And they still don’t accept credit or debit!

When you ask someone to name their favorite pizza in town, it’s almost a guarantee most people will rattle off Geraci’s – on the east side anyway. This is what they are known for and this is what we ordered – a large deluxe, with peppers, mushrooms, sausage, pepperoni, cheese and onions. If I had my choice, I would have preferred plain with mushrooms or ricotta or even pineapple. But I was vetoed and ended up picking off half my toppings (as much as I enjoy various salumis, I have never liked plain pepperoni and don’t care for sausage as a topping, either).

Even picked over, the pizza was still good. The crust is fairly thin, a bit doughy in parts and crunchy at the end. I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite, not even top 5, but it is enjoyable and always good to go back to those places that just make you feel good.

Not happy at Geraci’s. Service was very attentive and cheerful, but the kitchen is careless. My wife’s pepperoni and spinach pizza was a regular pizza; nothing special. We had better at California Pizza Kitchen.

My eggplant parmesan was partly overcooked and burnt.

And, then we were served frozen piece of Tiramisu.
