In honor of Cinco de Mayo (and because I’ve been craving Mexican), we headed to Momocho, which in my opinion, is hands-down the best place in town for Mexican. And a very fun environment in general.

We weren’t the only ones who wanted to celebrate the day with guacamole and margaritas. The restaurant had a pretty good turnout for a Monday. Not slammed, but definitely full, inside and out. I arrived happy we made a reservation the week prior.

We sat upstairs and I immediately noticed things I had never paid attention to on previous visits. I thought it was because it was still light outside and it’s usually dark out when we have been upstairs in the past. But Jamie was quick to point out it wasn’t the lighting, but rather lack of the usual 2 – 3 margaritas consumed downstairs first. Either way, on this visit I noticed all the different chairs with the various fun fabric patterns on the seat cushions and the lighted cross display on the one wall. Very cool touches for this already fun and funky restaurant.

For dinner, I started with a small order of guacamole and Jamie had the Caesar salad. For dinner, I went with my usual smoked trout and crab chilaquiles, while Jamie opted for the pork chop, with I believe tamale dumplings.

I almost didn’t order the chilaquiles. I always give Jamie crap for ordering the same thing at restaurants so in return, he was dishing it out to me. He’s right, I should try other things – and I have here and there, like the tuna and scallops. But this time, I couldn’t resist. This dish, with the sunny side up egg and black beans, is simply phenomenal and one of the best tasting Mexican dishes I have ever had. And last night, it was better than I remember (mostly because the spice was toned down). In fact, everything was great and satisfying as usual, from the chips, to the salad to Jamie’s chop. We left very happy – and full.

This leads me to another cool little thing I noticed. On my takeout box (as great as this dish is, it’s way too much to eat in one sitting – hello lunch leftovers), there was a stamp of a Mexican wrestler. A very simple touch, but I like how Chef Eric carries this theme through everything – even the small details like the to go box.

I’m a new Clevlander and am having such fun discovering new places to eat. We did Momocho for my husband’s birthday a few weeks ago and I wrote about it here:

We love reading your blog to find new places to add to our list!
