go greek this weekend

This weekend is the annual Greek Festival at Saint Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox church on Mayfield Road in Cleveland Heights.

I haven’t been since I lived in the Heights, but when I did go, I ate very, very well and had a blast! I love being Italian, but Greeks sure know how to feed you and entertain – sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference.

I missed the Feast in Little Italy this year (mega crowds, drunks and the heat just didn’t sound appealing to me – being preggers and all), but this one I may have to check out, even if it’s for a quick stop. It just wouldn’t be summer without one visit to any of our area “feasts.”

If you come early or go for luchyou canavoid the long lines. They have gyros and street food outside and full meals inside. I love the lamb shanks and pastries at this festival. The one in River had a great taverna with apps. The Tremont festival has good food, a lot of heart and is a great place to start your DEER HUNTER tour of Cleveland. I'm not Greek, but I love the food and all of the churches are beautiful.

is flaming cheese greek or american?

Hi Michelle,

Love your blog!

Question: I want to have a bar b que catered (yes, I'm lazy). Do you know of a good caterer who would do that? It's for about 26 people.

Thanks in advance!

The Canton festival is good too, we used to go to that when I was younger. Also the Cols festival, which is HUGE. Went a couple of years ago after not going for a long time, still huge, still great food.

I was waiting for you to chime in!

being 100% greek i feel like i need to participate. i haven't been to this one though, only the tremont festival.

i can't help it though my church in canton (st haralambous) has the BEST festival. maybe i'm just biased or maybe because i make the best flaming cheese (saganaki)

go greek!

I know exactly what church you are talking about, on W 14. I'll have to check it our next summer for sure - thanks.

You are missing out if the only Greek festival you've been to is the Mayfield rd one. I think their lines are the LONGEST of any of the festivals and the food seems to be better at some of the other fests, though it's certainly not bad at that festival.

Memorial Day weekend every year is the first festival, the church on W 14th street in Tremont (you see it right as you exit on 14th off 90 westbound through downtown). Mid-June is the one in Rocky River (St. Demetrios). I think they both have their strengths - the grape leaves at the Tremont festival are the best, and I think the pita (tyropita and spanakopita) at RR's festival are the best. They also have the best souvlaki at the RR festival.

Have fun!
