I live fairly close to my office, so for lunch I typically run home or just eat at my desk. When I do go out for lunch, it’s usually a quick bite at The American Tavern or takeout from Pacific East (you can’t beat their lunch special / 2 rolls, soup & salad for $8.95). Over the past month however, I’ve had a marathon of lunch meetings throughout the city. Here’s a recap of standout dishes from each place:

Lola // I love black beans. I cook with them all the time and am a sucker for any dish that lists this as an ingredient. I even made brownies last night that called for black beans as a secret ingredient. A few weeks ago I met a client for lunch at Lola, her first visit. I started with the pureed black bean soup topped with cilantro and I believe bits of guanciale. Outstanding. If I wasn’t with my client, I would have easily ordered a second bowl! Incredibly smooth and perhaps the lightest version of this soup I’ve ever tried. I’m still thinking about it. And the best part about going to East 4th for lunch? Grabbing a cappuccino at Erie Island after. Best in the city.

Shinano // The service is so slow that sometimes I swear they even forget you’re there. But they make a good roll. Several in fact. And that’s why I keep going back. And if you’re not in hurry, it’s a good place for lunch (actually, the food comes out super fast; it’s just taking your order and dropping off the check that they’re fairly leisurely about). The one roll in particular that keeps me coming back is the Volcano – an inside out roll with crab and avocado topped with broiled scallop, octopus tobiko and mayo. This roll is so good, that we ended up ordering a second one for the table on our last visit. The only thing I didn’t care for the first time I tried it was the amount of mayo. So when I get it, I always ask for very little mayo and it’s perfect each time.

Moxie // With its proximity to our office, this ends up being a popular spot for meetings. On this lunch in particular, I met with the coordinator for Flavors, the main fundraiser for The American Liver Foundation (I’m volunteering this year), who suggested we meet here. Moxie has several salads I like off the lunch menu, but this time I opted for something new – the Atlantic salmon with cauliflower puree, cauliflower florets and pomegranate reduction. Part of my New Year’s resolution was to eat more fish (cook more actually, but this counts), and with this dish, I’d eat it daily. I may never order salads at Moxie again.

Phnom Penh // Nothing warms you up during a Cleveland winter like a bowl of spicy hue beef soup with rice noodles, beef brisket and lemon grass. Pair it with their overstuffed and aromatic egg roll, and you’ll leave happy. While my past few visits here have been hit or miss, this place is still one of my favorites and this soup is the reason why.

I heart sushi. It’s up there as one of my favorite meals. For awhile now, I’ve been boasting that Pacific East gets my vote for favorite local place for sushi. And when the restaurant owners decided to open a second location in Eton, just a few miles from my house, I was downright giddy. So imagine my delight when Shinano, another popular sushi restaurant, closed its Richmond location and relocated to Solon. Now, my house is right smack in the middle of Pacific East and Shinano. For a sushi lover, this is ideal.

A few weeks ago, we made the super short trek to Solon to check out Shinano on behalf of Metromix. I’ve been to the Richmond location several times (and even more for takeout), so I knew the sushi would be satisfying, but what about the other items? Aside from the sushi, I’ve never given the menu a second look and was eager to dive in and try the non-sushi specialties.

You can read the whole store here. The short of it is, we will be back, but just for the rolls. The other items we tried were disappointing. In fact, the curry rice left such a bad taste in my mouth, it took several glasses of milk when I got home to erase (plus the dish itself is not appealing to the eye). Now I’m sure there are some stand outs, and to be fair, it’s not like we tried every single item. But in my opinion, sushi is their specialty and that suits me just fine.

Other low lights included the service and decor. I’ve heard from several people now that they too had poor service and I have now twice. Don’t get me wrong, service is super friendly, just super slow – with food, the check and picking up plates. I asked if the staff was all new and was told it’s mostly the same from the previous location, so no excuse there. As for the decor, truthfully, I wasn’t expecting much so it’s really not all that disappointing. Overall, the restaurant is very clean and neat, just on the cold and stale side.

But again, if it’s good sushi you’re craving, you will get it here. But in the end, Pacific East still retains my vote (but it’s nice to have options).

Chef Nolan Konkoski is the man responsible for the popular tequila dinners, among other tasty dishes, at Momocho. He’s originally from upstate New York and started cooking in college as a means to make money (went to school for English literature and writing). Lucky for us, he pursued cooking.

1. What are the top 5 spices every home chef should have? Chipotle, bay leaf, cumin/coriander, cinnamon and black peppercorns. But really, every home chef should just use more high-quality salt.

2. What is your favorite and least favorite thing to make? Soups and sauces. I love the patience they require and the freedom you have to build a strong background of flavors. I hate making empanadas, chile rellenos and chimichangas – any tiny, tight, time-consuming items that require your hands.

3. What is your favorite thing about Cleveland and what drives you nuts? I love city’s overall support of cinema — from the Cedar Lee and Shaker Square theaters to the Cinematheque to the Film Festival every year. As for my least favorite things… traffic lights, traffic cops and corned beef.

4. If you could cook for one person, real or dead, who would it be? P. Christopher Kelley.

5. You’re having a dinner party, top 5 songs on your play list? Mogwai – Dial:Revenge, Paul Simon – Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard, The Fall – Cruiser’s Creek, Tom Waits – Ol’ 55, and Yo La Tengo – The Hour Grows Late

6. Favorite restaurant in Cleveland? Pacific East, Parallax, Flying Fig and Lolita.

7. What restaurant do you miss? Genoa Importing Company in Albany. I ate there five days a week in college.

8. What place have Clevelanders yet to discover? 2182 Bistro in Brecksville. I know it’s not exactly a secret, but I think it deserves more attention.

9. What’s your last meal on Earth? A cheese and charcuterie board.

10. Most unusual food you have ever tried? The garbage plate at Nick Tahou’s in Rochester, NY.

11. Most famous person you have cooked for? Ah, the true test of a great chef. I made a sandwich for Tony Shaloub once. How’s that?

12. What’s the inspiration behind the tequila dinners? For me, the tequila dinners allow a certain freedom with food, beverage and service that we don’t otherwise have the time, space or resources for. We get to shut down the restaurant to the public for one night and treat a small group of people to a more precisely thought-out and executed menu. It is what most chefs wish they could do on a nightly basis. You limit the variables, take the decision-making out of the customers’ hands, and hopefully create a memorable experience. I love briefly putting aside the taquitos and fried ice cream and focusing on fresh concepts. Plus, we all get to get drunk on a Wednesday in the middle of winter.

13. Where do you grocery shop? Dave’s Market in Ohio City, unfortunately. West Side Market and Trader Joe’s occasionally.

14. Favorite guilty pleasure when it comes to food? Cadbury Mini Eggs.

15. Any plans to open your own restaurant some day? If I am still cooking in 10 years, I will have my own place. But there is too much to learn and experience before then to promise anything.

16. Anything new on the menu that people should try if they haven’t been in a few months? We are looking forward to a menu change in the spring.

17. If you weren’t a chef, what would you be doing? Worst-case scenario: teaching high school English. Best-case scenario: writing and directing movies.

18. If you could be another chef, any chef, for a day, who would it be? It’s probably an obvious answer, but Anthony Bourdain looks to have a pretty sweet life. Eat, drink and travel to exotic places.

19. What is one easy Mexican-inspired dish anyone could make at home? Tostitos chips and salsa.

20. Favorite TV show? HBO’s The Wire is the best show ever on American TV. It is realistic, important, timely, humorous and incredibly intelligent. So you rarely meet anyone who has heard of it. Everyone is too busy watching Rachel Ray make a Triscuit sandwich.

21. What is one thing you would change about your job? I would love if everyone I worked with showed up on time every day – and stopped asking to borrow money. My job would be much less stressful.

22. What is the best plate of food you have ever had? My mom’s sour cream pear pie.

23. Favorite meal from your childhood? The #2 Super Value Meal at McDonalds: crispy chicken sandwich, fries and an orange Hi-C.

Pacific East has finally opened in Eton. A few months behind the planned October opening, but at least it’s here now. Eager to check it out, we went for a quick lunch today. And we weren’t the only ones – the place was almost all filled up, plus several passersby popping in to grab a take-out menu.

The menu is basically the same as its original location on Coventry. The space is a little smaller, but nice and simple overall – especially the sushi bar. And for being open only a few days, service was good as well.

For lunch, I had the sushi special: 2 rolls (I chose Philadelphia and yellowtail), soup and salad for $8.95. My husband had the beef udon with vegetables in a broth. My lunch was great – just as good as the Coventry location. Jamie’s was a bit disappointing. Although the super thick noodles and miso-like broth were good, the beef and vegetables were a bit bland overall.

Despite the so so beef udon, the sushi, miso soup and salad with that addictive ginger dressing were wonderful – and that’s really all I care about. Pacific East, in my opinion, is the best sushi spot in town. They are going to do very well in this location and we will definitely be regulars, along with most of my friends and coworkers.

Pacific East: 216 765 1305

I just received one of those dumb forwards: what is your favorite color, Coke or Pepsi, yadda, yadda, yadda. I’m not a fan of forwards or filling out stupid questionnaires about things that friends/family members should have general knowlegde of after knowing me for 31 years. But, it did get me thinking about my favorite things in town and therefore did serve some purpose as my latest entry:

Favorite
•Pizza: mama santa’s or mama joe’s.
