pepper’s italian restaurant

It’s not often that I find myself in a local restaurant that not only have I never heard of, but don’t know anyone else that has either. Enter Pepper’s Italian Restaurant, my latest review for Metromix.

The entire review is here. Basically, it was better than I expected; however, the sauce was disappointing and pasta overcooked, two things an Italian restaurant must get right. But for its pizza, Pepper’s really did shine. And the veal wasn’t too bad either – not great, but again, better than I would have thought.

So while I won’t be making any special trips to Lakewood anytime soon based on the food there alone, if I lived in the area, I would be a regular for takeout pizza and the occasional dine in during the week. The staff alone is worth that – incredibly entertaining and friendly and the one waitress truly did know everyone and their latest drama.

Did you try the lasagna? That was always my favorite when I lived in Lakewood & frequented it regularly. A delicious cheesy, sausage mess. My wife always loved the eggplant Parmesan. I heard ownership changed a year or so ago (I could be wrong, but it's what I heard.) I've wondered if it stayed as good through the change.

Were you at the flavor tripping event tonight? What did you think?

    Hi Dave –

I wasn’t at that event, was it good? I didn’t try the lasagna, but the couple next to me did and she seemed pretty happy with her order.

It was a really good time. The effect of the berry seemed to vary from person to person but most people I talked to really enjoyed it. It was not as intense as I imagined, but some things definitely were. Any citrus (especially lemons), vinegar, and beer were my favorites. Matt’s source for the berry fell through at the last minute so he ended up using the pill form of miracle fruit. We are planning to do another event with the actual berry so it will be interesting to compare. You should definitely give it a try if you have the chance.

I agree, the pizza is the best thing about the place. Though the recently opened Dewey’s in Lakewood is actually much better, the atomsphere is less cozy than at Pepper’s.
