the kitchen tour/tasting of akron: your chance to go

The Kitchen Tour of Akron showcases the work of local design professionals, featuring six kitchens in West Akron, Bath and Fairlawn Heights. While I’ve never participated on this tour, I’m told it’s incredibly popular and a great afternoon out.

The ShowHouse is the Junior League of Akron’s flagship fundraiser. The Junior League is an organization that provides leadership training and volunteer opportunities for women. These opportunities happen primarily through their Focus Project, which is an initiative created to respond to unmet needs in the community. The goal of  Focus Project is to strengthen families. The current project – Adopt-A-High Rise – provides socialization and support to lower-income seniors in Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority facilities. The ShowHouse funds these Focus Project initiatives.

This year’s ShowHouse – The Kitchen Tour – will feature five recently renovated kitchens in some of the most gracious homes in the Akron area. It will highlight the work of the designers, interior decorators and/or architects that completed the renovations.  The renovators will be present during the tour to talk about their work on the kitchens. There are two ways to participate:

  • Taste of the Tour: The preview event on Sunday, May 15, from 2 to 5 p.m. It will feature four of the tour homes. During the event, each home will host a local chef who will prepare and serve food tastings from Akron-area restaurants including Bricco, Samira’s and Vaccaro’s Trattoria. Pastries will be provided by Heavenly Bites, Tiffany’s Bakery and Ice Cream and West Side Bakery. Important note: attendees pick up maps, tickets and their goodie bag (which includes Junior League of Akron cookbook and treats) in advance of the event.  Value of the pair of tickets is $90.
  • ShowHouse: The Kitchen Tour is the main event and runs Friday, May 20, through Sunday, May 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The tour will include five recently renovated kitchens in West Akron, Bath and Fairlawn. Designers participating in the event include Christine Haught, Ltd.; Kitchen Design Group; Patios by Stebner; REEDER Architects, Inc.; Robert’s Remodeling and Constructions Co., Inc.; and Yellow Creek Trading Company. Important note: attendees pick up maps and tickets at Akrona Galleries, 1756 W. Market St., Akron. Value of the pair of tickets is $50.

A few things to consider about these events: No children under 12. Event sites are not wheelchair accessible. No photography. And each participant is responsible for their own transportation. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit here.

Up for grabs: A pair of tickets for the preview event and a pair for the actual tour. If you’d like to be considered, please leave a comment to this post telling me who you’d like to redesign your kitchen. You have until noon on May 9th. Winners will be chosen via Random.org.

PS – If I were playing along, I’d have to go with Jeff Lewis.

I would either have Ricca Newmark in NYC…or Alton Brown.

Anyone and everyone. Our 1940’s kitchen is the last room in the house that we haven’t redone, and it’s a disaster. Which stinks because my boyfriend is an amazing cook, and he deserves an awesome space.

Would love to attend these events!

Perfect timing as I was just online looking for a kitchen table and buffet. We don’t need to renovate but we’ve lived in our new home for 3 years and still have the table and chairs I bought 13 years ago for $100. Its our last room to decorate.
I know nothing about decorating so I’m not sure who I’d pick (I love Jeff Lewis too but he’s too contemporary for my house) but I want something white washed with a shabby chic look. Also have a small space to work with so need good ideas to make that work.

I’d have Gwyn Duggan redesign my kitchen. She designed Paula Deen’s kitchen. Her style is very Southern chic.

I’m working on our kitchen design right now – what timing! I’d love to work with Candice Olsen too. Beautiful work. Better yet – a local designer who “gets” useful, creative, beautiful spaces – and applies green building techniques and products, including reclaimed items (creative counters, flooring products, etc.)

If I were to be given a makeover, I would prefer to have our kitchen remodeled by my partner, as he is a fantastic designer. Still, I like the way that Kitchen Design Group marries old world style with modernity. Can you get the makeover set up for me as a giveaway? No? Well, I would be happy with the tickets….
